About Us

The Spanish government, through the Spanish Embassy Office of Cultural and Scientific Affairs in London, and in cooperation and collaboration with other Spanish institutions and organisations, promotes Spanish culture and art in Great Britain and Ireland. It works towards strengthening the mutual exchange of information in the areas of art, culture and science.

The main aims of Spanish-British cultural cooperation are to contribute to a better awareness of both Spanish and British history and culture, to foster links between the creative sectors in both countries, and to promote the cultural diversity and artistic expression of contemporary Spain, respecting the variety of expression and opinion within Spain.

This cultural network includes artistic projects related to dance, music, visual arts, literature, humanities, architecture, design and so on, in collaboration with the relevant English bodies..

The Office for Cultural and Scientific Affairs also supports the dissemination within Great Britain of the culture, arts and heritage of the 17 autonomous regions. Where financially viable, it also supports the cultural programmes of other Spanish bodies, both public and private, which undertake projects in collaboration with British partners, where possible with public and private funding from both countries, and which serve the aforementioned objectives .

Spanish-British cultural relations are regulated by the Agreement of the 12th of July 1960.

In the scientific domain, relations are determined by the Agreement of the 26th of May 1979 between the Higher Council of Scientific Research and the Science Research Council, the main aim being to facilitate the mutual exchange of information between scientific institutions in both countries, whilst promoting joint participation in research projects and the mobility of scientists between both countries.
